SpVgg Greuther Fürth has signed 26‑year‑old centre‑back Jannis Heuer from 1. FC Kaiserslautern to correct a leaky pre‑season. The new addition signed until 30 June 2029 and is expected to start immediately.
Why is Heuer needed now?
Currently SpVgg Greuther Fürth sits on the 16th place in the 2. Bundesliga, 37 points, with a record of 10 wins, 7 draws and 17 losses from 34 games. The side has scored 49 goals this season but conceded 68 (‑19 goal difference). This deficit is reflected in recent form: the last five matches ended 3 wins, 0 draws and 2 losses (WLWWL). Heuer is expected to use his experience to stabilise the defence.
What does Heuer bring?
Heuer, standing 1.89 m, logged 119 appearances for SC Paderborn, FCK and Preußen Münster, most recently on loan at Preußen Münster. Coach Heiko Vogel stresses that Heuer "is predestined by his personality to take on a leadership role in the back line". He is quick, defends depth well and adds another facet to build‑up play. Those traits match Fürth’s wish to not only tighten the defence but also become more versatile in possession.
How did the squad react?
After the announcement the squad showed immediate enthusiasm. "We have got our wanted player and look forward to him," Vogel said in the official release. The team, which last won 2‑0 against Rot‑Weiß Essen on 26 May 2026, hopes Heuer will provide the missing consistency that has been lacking in recent games.
What does this mean for the season?
With Heuer in the roster Fürth could close the defensive gap faster and make the goal of avoiding relegation more realistic. They are currently 33 points behind league leaders FC Schalke 04. A solid centre‑back could cut down the goals against and put the side in a position to pick up more points from tight matches. The upcoming fixtures will reveal whether Heuer makes an immediate impact or grows into a key figure over the season.
